Federal Scholarships

Going to college is an expensive affair: students need to finance both heir course fees and their living costs. With both of these costs increasing every year, financing college can be quite a difficult task.

Fortunately, the government recognizes both the financial challenges of a college education and the importance of graduates to our society and economy. As a result, the government has put together a number of financial aid programs to make going to college more economically viable and encourage students to pursue subjects that are especially important to society.

Scholarships are just one of the ways by which the government supports students. Like a grant, a scholarship is a gift of money that does not need to be paid back, making them an invaluable resource to students.

Types of Federal Scholarship

There are a number of federal scholarships that are geared towards different kinds of students. The most popular types of scholarship include:

FEEA Scholarship

This type of scholarship is exclusively available to those who have been employed by the federal government or have been a dependent of a federal government employee for three years or more. If you are eligible, this scholarship can award you between $300 and $2000 a year.

UGSP scholarship

This scholarship is aimed at exceptional students, those with at least a 3.5 GPA, from low-income backgrounds who want to study a healthcare subject. This scholarship gives students a maximum £20, 000 a year to put towards their costs of living and the college fees. However, it is important to note that there are a number of terms and conditions that a student must agree to in order to be considered for this scholarship, such as attending research training during the summer and agreeing to work for NIH after graduating.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

This type of scholarship is aimed at students from low-income backgrounds who wish to study abroad. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must be receiving a federal Pell grant and on a two-year or four-year course. If eligible, students can expect to receive up to $5000 a year. In addition, if a student is studying what the government terms a ‘critical need language’ they may be entitled to an additional $3000.

Applying for a federal scholarship

As with any form of government financial aid, students wishing to apply for a federal scholarship will need to complete a FAFSA. This can be completed online, over the phone or even by post.
